Summer Squad Building Update 2023/24 | BlueArmyBlog | A Carlisle United Blog

Happy Friday to you all. It's been a busy week for the club with the players returning for pre season, and some new signing announcements to get the juices flowing.

Back on 11th June, I had said that we needed in the region of 10 players on the basis that Feeney and Patrick weren't signing, these were:

GK

CB x 2

RB/RWB

LB/LWB

CM x 2

WF x 2

ST

With the new signing accouncments made this week, I can update the list now, see below.

GK

CB

RB/RWB

CM x 1

WF x 2

ST

Simmo said at the fans forum this week, he's expecting six or seven signings following the accouncments of McCalmont and Robinson. Now that Barclay has been announced, thats five or six more signings we can expect.

Nailed on positions are:

GK

RB/RWB

CM

WF

ST

That's the five I would expect as a minimum, might leave us a bit short up top if we revert to 433. Gibson is the floater who can play 10 or wide in either formation. It would be good to sign some more versatile players.

I wonder how many will be loans and how many permanents. Especially considering we haven't signed anyone with 'experience' yet. I certainly think the CM and ST that come in will have plenty of EFL minutes. RWB will hopefully be Back on loan again for the season. The WF perhaps a speed merchant loanee in the guise of JK Gordon. I worry we won't have loads of pace up top though, as League One teams will press us more than League Two, leaving space in behind.

Goalkeeper again, maybe a loanee. That's three loans, and maybe leaves one space in the squad for an opportunistic signing at the end of the window if someone becomes available. 2023s version of Michael Bridges would be nice.

All in all, a decent start to the summer to get 3 players in for pre season who know the club and won't need any adjustment time.
